Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – A woman is dead after a crash on Interstate 55 near Chatham Thursday.

Illinois State Police say the crash happened just after noon Thursday southbound near Exit 88.

Details are scarce, but troopers say it was a single vehicle crash, closing the right lane for the better part of two hours.

Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon says a 63-year-old female was the only person in the vehicle, and pronounced dead.

Allmon says the identity of of the woman is being withheld pending notification of family, and an autopsy which is scheduled for Friday.

Troopers call the crash an “active investigation.”
