Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Snow is coming — but don’t be deceived by how little the Springfield area may get Saturday.

National Weather Service forecasters in Lincoln say a Winter Storm Warning will take effect Saturday at 9 a.m., expiring at Midnight Sunday night.  Forecasters say a total accumulation of four to nine inches may be possible by Sunday night.  But, less than an inch of accumulation will happen during the daytime Saturday.  After a break, forecasters say two to three inches could fall between Saturday night and early Sunday, with another two to three inches between Sunday morning and Sunday evening.

After the snow ends Sunday night, winds are expected to pick up, making for blowing and drifting of snow a possibility.

During Sunday, forecasters discourage traveling, but are encouraging preparing if power goes out.  They also suggest checking on neighbors and the elderly.

Cold weather won’t be going away.  Wind chills could return to -20 levels Sunday night.  Forecasters also say highs are expected to be well below normal for the next seven days.

Meanwhile, the City of Springfield isn’t taking the upcoming winter storm lightly.  The city has issued a Snow Emergency from 7:00 a.m. Saturday to noon Monday.

That means you must remove car from the street if it’s parked there, especially on posted snow routes, or they could be towed.

The Village of Rochester has also issued a Snow Emergency, from 11 a.m. Saturday to 11 a.m. Monday. Other cities likely have issued, or will issue, their own emergencies, all so crews can safely plow roads.
