Springfield, IL (CHAMBANA TODAY) – Two lucky Powerball players in Illinois are waking up millionaires after matching five winning numbers—just one number shy of the full jackpot—during Saturday’s historic $1.787 billion drawing, the second-largest lottery prize in U.S. history, according to the Illinois Lottery.

While the record-setting jackpot was split between ticket holders in Texas and Missouri, Illinois players had a strong showing:

  • Two Illinois tickets matched five white balls (11, 23, 44, 61, 62) but not the red Powerball (17), earning their holders $1 million each.

  • Five more Illinois tickets won $50,000 each, and

  • Four tickets claimed $100,000 each by adding the Power Play multiplier, which doubled the standard prize.

Across the country, winners also emerged in California, Kansas, Texas, and other states:

  • Tickets in Kansas and Texas used the Power Play multiplier to boost their winnings to $2 million.

  • Players in Colorado, Florida, Massachusetts, Ohio, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, West Virginia, and more each took home $1 million by matching five numbers.

  • In California, where prizes are based on ticket sales and number of winners, two tickets won $1.5 million each.

In total, more than 9.9 million winning tickets were sold across the U.S., with prizes ranging from $4 to $100,000.

  • 232 players matched four white balls and the Powerball to win $50,000, and

  • 90 players doubled that to $100,000 with the 2x Power Play multiplier.

The winning numbers from the Saturday, Sept. 6 drawing were: 11, 23, 44, 61, 62 and Powerball 17.
The Power Play multiplier was 2x.

With the jackpot now claimed, the Powerball grand prize resets to $20 million for the next drawing on Monday, Sept. 8, with a cash value of $9.2 million.

Powerball tickets are sold in 45 states, plus Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are held at 9:59 p.m. CT every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday, and are streamed online.
