Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – An accident Saturday during the height of the snowfall in Springfield claimed the life of a 14-year-old girl.

Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon says the girl from Chicago was a passenger in a car that crashed on Interstate 55 near the Clear Lake Ave. exit in Springfield.

Not many details are known, but Allmon calls the crash a “multiple car collision.”  Illinois State Police is said to be investigating the crash, but they have not yet responded to a request for more information.

The girl, Allmon says, was pronounced dead at the scene.  ISP said at the time of the crash after 12:00 p.m. that the southbound lanes of I-55 would be closed for several hours.

It’s not officially clear if the crash was weather-related.  Allmon did not say if an autopsy would be performed on the victim.
