Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – It’s about time for something else for animal control in Springfield, rather than continue its arrangement with Sangamon County, says Ald. Roy Williams.

“All of us are going to agree that they are good babysitters; that they can run a shelter,” said Williams Tuesday. “This is not the issue – there is an enforcement piece to this, where people — their dogs have been killed by other dogs! Their cats have been killed by other cats! And then they’ll call and say, alderman, why is that animal back home ?!?”

“I don’t hear as much about dogs in my ward but definitely the feral cats and the issues they present and wait times on having someone come out,” said Ald. Erin Conley. “So we probably need a more informed and holistic picture and understanding of what’s going on out there.”

Next Tuesday’s agenda will include a proposal for another one-year contract with the county and a $538,447.05 payment to cover the current fiscal year — which has just a month and a half to go.
