(CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Just over a week into 2026, Illinois State Police have reported two crashes in which drivers have ignored the “Move Over” law and crashed into its vehicles.

The latest was Thursday evening along I-88 near Rock Falls, when a car hit the passenger side of a squad car (pictured) at the scene of a rollover accident. The car also hit a piece of equipment being towed by a tollway maintenance truck.

The trooper and the tollway worker were in their respective vehicles but were not injured. A state police news release says the car’s driver was injured and taken to a hospital. Police say the driver failed to slow down for a curve, and the car spun out. The driver faces numerous charges, including violation of “Scott’s Law.”

Illinois drivers are required to move over when there is a vehicle with its hazard lights flashing on a roadside. State police say 2025 saw fourteen violations and seven troopers injured. The fine for a first offense ranges between $250 and $10,000.
