Springfield, IL (WAND) – The Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office is warning people after learning about scammers impersonating deputies.

SCSO posted to Facebook about a phone scam going around where people get calls that appear to be from the sheriff’s office, claiming they have to report to jail to be fitted with an ankle monitor for a pending court case.

The caller threatens that a warrant will be issued if the person doesn’t comply.

The Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office does not handle electronic monitoring and said they rarely call people over the phone about court matters, warrants, jury duty, or orders of protection.

If you get a call like this, hang up and call the sheriff’s office at (217) 753-6855 to verify.
