SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) – Sangamon County State’s Attorney John Milhiser and his victim advocacy staff received a “Champion of Victims’ Rights” award from Marsy’s Law for Illinois.

The award was handed out Tuesday at the Sangamon County Complex in Springfield.

The award recognizes those who treat crime victims with “compassion and commitment” to ensure fairness.

Marsy’s Law was an amendment to the Illinois Constitution passed by voters in 2014, spelling out victims’ rights.

State Director of Marsy’s Law Jennifer Bishop-Jenkins pointed to the treatment of crime victims from high-profile cases like the Sonya Massey murder case to criminal cases that have attracted less attention.
