Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents serving in President Donald Trump’s current term (2025-29) would be prohibited from joining a police force in Illinois, under a bill announced Wednesday at the Capitol.

“ICE’s violence has escalated with one major contributing factor, that being their training and their recruitment practices,” said State Sen. Laura Fine (pictured, left) (D-Glenview). Before the current Trump administration, ICE agents received an average of sixteen weeks of training. Now that average has dropped to about 47 days.”

Fine said the agents are the opposite of what a police officer should be. “What we need to focus on is the erosion of trust from our communities and the fear that’s happening in our streets,” she said. “I go back to Halloween: there were helicopters flying over my neighborhood, when kids were simply trying to trick-or-treat and enjoy themselves. I’ve had residents kidnapped from my Home Depot parking lots taken from our streets.”

“As a former fire and police commissioner, we hired and re recruited officers whom we held at the highest standards,” said State Sen. Adriane Johnson (pictured, right) (D-Buffalo Grove). “In Illinois, they require extensive training and ongoing training. We cannot afford to have ICE agents infiltrate our outstanding law enforcement departments in the state of Illinois.”
