Phoenix Center: Rumors of our death are greatly exaggerated

Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Springfield’s LGBTQ community and resource center, the Phoenix Center, says rumors of its death are greatly exaggerated.

Citizen Justin Courtney, addressing the city council this week, said the center is “at risk of permanently closing. It serves LGBTQ people, people living with HIV and many others in our area, and, honestly, it serves a lot of straight people, too. They, as far as I know, do not ask what your sexual orientation is when you come in for services.”

Responding via email, interim executive director Teresa Silva said:

“Recent public comments suggesting an imminent closure of the center are not accurate. While financial challenges are real, our organization is actively working on solutions and remains committed to serving the community. Our leadership is planning responsibly for all scenarios with a focus on long-term sustainability. Phoenix Center leadership looks forward to keeping the community updated as we move forward.”
