Springfield, Illinois (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – The National Weather Service has confirmed an EF-1 tornado touched down in Springfield Wednesday night.

That twister is responsible for heavy damage at Abraham Lincoln Capitol Airport and the Animal Protective League facility on Taintor Road. No injuries to animals or people were reported.

The tornadoes were spawned during multiple rounds of severe weather that moved through the area.

NWS reports a line of thunderstorms produced wind gusts of up to 80 m.p.h. that led to widespread wind damage across much of northern Illinois, including a derecho.

The NWS also says damage surveys will be conducted over the upcoming days to determine the number of tornadoes that occurred across northern and central Illinois Thursday night.

The Lincoln NWS office says more severe weather could pass through the area Saturday evening into the overnight hours with large hail and winds up to 60 m.p.h.
