Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – University of Illinois Springfield’s School of Nursing is hosting their “Nurse for a day” event. “Nurse for a Day,” is being offered to high school students to introduce them to professional opportunities in nursing. This immersive program is designed to provide teenagers with a firsthand glimpse into the world of nursing, combining real-world clinical experiences with mentorship and education. As the demand for skilled healthcare professionals continues to rise, initiatives like this one are inspiring the next generation to consider careers that make a difference.
Student Participation and Program Activities
This year, over 500 high school students from throughout Illinois are expected to attend the event at UIS. Participants will engage in a nursing simulation lab that features advanced manikins, providing hands-on experience in clinical scenarios. Additionally, students will join discussion groups led by current nursing students, offering insights and perspectives on the path to a nursing career.
Senior nursing student Vanessa Aguado, a group leader, enjoys introducing students to the nursing program, giving campus tours, and inspiring interest in the field.
Students seeking a Bachelor of Science in Nursing can apply to UIS as freshmen and also for Guaranteed Professional Program Admissions, which ensures entry into the UIC Nursing program in their junior year.
Hands-On Clinical Experience
Christine Freer, Simulation Lab Coordinator and Clinical Faculty, emphasized the importance of hands-on learning for high school students at this stage in their education. During the event, participants could wear surgical gowns, hats, and masks, and to take part in live simulations alongside UIC students and staff.
Introduction: Bridging the Gap Between Aspiration and Experience
For many high school students, choosing a career path is a daunting task, often shrouded in uncertainty and shaped by limited exposure to various professions. The “Nurse for a Day” program aims to demystify the nursing field by inviting students to step directly into the shoes of a nurse, if only for a single day. Hosted annually UIS/UIC School of Nursing simulation center, this initiative creates a supportive environment where learning transcends the classroom.

Additionally, students benefit from meeting with an academic advisor, gaining guidance and insight into the educational pathways available in nursing.

The event is from 9 am—2pm both Tuesday 9/9 & Wednesday 9/10.
