New year, new option: Exploring endoscopic weight loss procedures

Champaign, IL (CHAMBANA TODAY) – As the New Year begins, many people focus on improving their health and losing weight. For those who haven’t found lasting success with diet, exercise or medication, a minimally invasive option is now available through OSF HealthCare.

Dr. Jason Bill, an interventional gastroenterologist, offers endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty, a non-surgical bariatric procedure that reduces stomach size and helps patients feel full sooner. The outpatient procedure uses sutures placed through an endoscope and typically allows patients to go home the same day.

The procedure is part of the OSF bariatric program in collaboration with OSF Mission Partners at the RiverPlex Weight Management Clinic, which provides long-term lifestyle and nutrition support.

Patients with a BMI between 30 and 50 are generally good candidates, especially those who are active, motivated and seeking more than medication but not ready for traditional surgery.

Patients can expect to lose about 15–20% of their body weight, along with improvements in conditions like diabetes, sleep apnea and fatty liver disease. Dr. Bill notes the procedure may also benefit patients who cannot tolerate weight-loss medications.

“With the right support before and after the procedure, this can be a powerful starting point for long-term health,” Dr. Bill says.
