New Berlin, IL (WAND) – New Berlin Chief of Police Terry Nydegger has died.

Sangamon County Rescue Squad announced Nydegger’s death on Facebook. Nydegger was also the longest-serving active SCRS member.

New Berlin Mayor Mike Krall was a longtime friend of Nydegger. He told WAND News Nydegger was killed in a hit and run accident while coming home from vacation in Wisconsin Monday.

Krall said the community is devastated by the loss. He said Nydegger had been on the village board since 1983, served as a medic for the SWAT team, served on the Sangamon County dive team, and was constantly giving back to the community.

“Terry proudly served the citizens of Sangamon County with honor, dedication and distinction for 48 years,” the Sangamon County Rescue Squad posted. “Throughout countless emergencies over the decades, his calm presence, hands-on experience, and steady leadership helped save many lives and guided those around him through difficult situations.”

“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Terry’s family, friends, and fellow members during this difficult time.”

WAND News has reached out to the Wisconsin State Police for more information on their investigation.
