UPDATE:  Man arrested following Friday night shooting death in Springfield

UPDATED 11:40 A.M. 3/9/26

Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – A man is dead after he was shot Friday night on Springfield’s east side, and another man has been arrested on weapons charges.

According to a news release from Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon, the 31-year-old male was pronounced dead at HSHS St. John’s Hospital around 11:45 p.m. Friday by hospital staff,

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday, Allmon said, and the identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of immediate family members.

Springfield Police said Monday the incident was first reported as multiple shots being fired at 8:48 p.m. Friday in the 13– block of East Jackson Street. A male was found on the scene with an apparent gunshot wound.

Police say Randy Crockett, 23, was arrested on preliminary charges of Possession of a Firearm-No FOID and Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon. Crockett is in the Sangamon County Jail pending court appearances. There is not yet a formal case filed against him.

Springfield Police are said to still be investigating the shooting.
