Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – You know by now that being in the sun can be dangerous. But as you apply the sunscreen, don’t forget your eyes!

“The skin around our eyes is very sensitive, and even our eyes you can actually get a sunburn on your eye or in your eye, if you will,” said Tia Rapps, community cancer education coordinator at Memorial Health. “It’s important to wear those UV-A or UV-B protective sunglasses. Not all sunglasses have that protection, so it’s important when you are buying sunglasses that you’re looking to make sure it says “100 percent UV protection” or “100 percent AB protection. Another level of protection is putting a hat on, so you have some shade.”

If you have already taken the tag off your sunnies and thrown it away, Rapps said, “maybe talking to your eye doctor, sometimes they can check your sunglasses to see if it’s got that protection in it.”

Rapps appeared on the WTAX Morning Newswatch.
