Chicago, IL (CHAMBANA TODAY) – Illinois residents now have until Dec. 31 to enroll in health insurance coverage that will begin Jan. 1, state officials announced, extending the first open enrollment deadline for Get Covered Illinois.

The extension marks an early move by the state’s new, fully state-run health insurance marketplace, which is operating independently of the federal HealthCare.gov platform for the first time this year. Officials say the added flexibility allows Illinois to better respond to consumer needs during a period of rising premiums and shifting federal policy.

“Shifting to a state-based marketplace has given Illinois the authority and flexibility to make decisions that put our residents first,” said Morgan Winters, director of Get Covered Illinois. “This enrollment deadline extension is exactly the kind of customer-focused action that was not possible under a federally facilitated marketplace.”

State officials said the extra time is intended to help consumers compare plans, receive enrollment assistance and adjust to changes in the marketplace, including insurers exiting certain areas and premium increases that may require some residents to select new plans or different metal levels.

All plans offered through Get Covered Illinois include essential health benefits such as prescription drug coverage, mental health services, pediatric care, emergency services and free preventive care, according to the Illinois Department of Insurance.

Residents who want coverage to begin Jan. 1 must complete enrollment by Dec. 31. Plans, financial assistance options and enrollment tools are available at GetCoveredIllinois.gov.

Free help is available through certified navigators, licensed brokers and the Get Covered Illinois Customer Assistance Center, which provides support in more than 250 languages. Assistance is available by phone at 1-866-311-1119, with extended hours during the open enrollment period.
