Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – The University of Illinois Springfield campus hosted a “Dr. Martin Luther King Day of Service” on Friday. Students, teachers, and faculty members got together to create care packages for local nonprofit organizations that support individuals and families in need.

“This event means a lot to me because it’s a great way to give back and also honor the legacy of Dr. King, Jr.,” said Corinna Thomas, student representative.  “We’re sending out care kits to five organizations in our community, so they’ll be able to benefit off this. We’re in the midst of making a lot of kits.”

Snack kits, hygiene kits, and care kits all were assembled. Alot of products were being boxed up and shipped out.

Thomas said while most of the work was done Friday, more is expected throughout the next week.

This Day of Service helps out local non-profit organizations like, The James Project, Mini O’Beirne Crisis Nursery, Lee Elementary School, Helping Hands, and others.
