(CAPITOL CITY NOW) – By executive order, Gov. JB Pritzker has created a new weapon in his fight against the Trump administration and its deployment of federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to Chicago.

He has created the Illinois Accountability Commission.

“The commission will be charged with three core missions,” said the governor. “1) creating a public record of the abuses; 2) capturing the impact on families and communities; 3) recommending actions to prevent further harm and to pursue justice.”

The director of the Illinois Department of Human Rights, Jim Bennett, said at the announcement in Chicago Thursday, “this is about protecting human rights and restoring trust between law enforcement and the communities that they serve. This is about standing up for Illinois values when federal leadership has abandoned the American principles that all of us hold dear.”

Former federal judge Ruben Castillo will chair the commission. Patricia Brown Holmes, a former Cook County associate judge, will be vice chair.
