Five arrested after burglary to Scheel’s, search of home; 14 guns recovered

Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Springfield Police say they’ve recovered guns allegedly stolen late Sunday night from the city’s Scheel’s store, along with others, drugs, and a large amount of cash. arresting five people in the process.

Springfield Police say three juveniles are jailed on charges including weapons-related offenses.

Romero Allen, 20, faces charges of burglary, theft, possession of a firearm – no FOID, unlawful use of a weapon-while masked, possession of a stolen firearm, possession of a firearm and firearm ammunition, and aggravated unlawful use of weapon.

Avery Sanders, 35, faces charges of armed habitual criminal, possession of a stolen firearm, manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, and methamphetamine delivery.

The burglary to Scheel’s was reported Sunday, April 5, at 10:21 p.m.  Officers say suspects had already fled the scene, but learned that several guns were stolen along with other merchandise.

Police say Allen was located less than an hour later, and two of the firearms were found.

Juveniles were arrested on Monday, when five more firearms were found.  Between search warrants and the burglaries, all told, police say 14 guns were recovered, 151 grams of methamphetamine, 91 grams of crack cocaine, stolen merchandise, and $12,760 in cash were recovered.

Police say among the agencies helping them was the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms.
