Decatur, IL (WAND) – A Macon County man was arrested after deputies say explosions from his property were powerful enough to shake nearby homes and set off car alarms.

According to the Macon County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded on Sunday, to the 6500 block of West Rock Springs Road after receiving multiple calls reporting loud explosions. Callers told authorities the blasts knocked pictures off their walls and triggered car alarms in the area.

Deputies were able to locate the source of the explosions and identified 57-year-old Roger Major as the person responsible. Investigators say Major had been detonating large quantities of Tannerite, a binary explosive target commonly used for shooting sports that detonates when struck by a high-velocity bullet.

Authorities say Major admitted to detonating the Tannerite on his property but showed little concern for the impact the explosions were having on neighboring homes.

Major was arrested on a charge of reckless conduct. He was issued a notice to appear in court at a later date and was released at the scene.

While Tannerite is legal to possess in Illinois, the sheriff’s office emphasized that its use is regulated. Individuals must possess less than 50 pounds, have a valid Illinois FOID card, and use the material in a safe and responsible manner.

The sheriff’s office says the incident serves as a reminder that even legal materials can pose serious risks when used improperly, especially in residential or populated areas.
