Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – In a world in which the choices are YesNo, and Table, opponents of a data center proposed for Sangamon County could not complain about Monday’s 15-13 Sangamon County Board vote to table the matter.

That vote ended a meeting which began with the board voting down the same motion.

The center, which CyrusOne plans for southern Sangamon County, is touted as an economic boon or an environmental bust, depending on who is speaking.

“There are zero occupied residences within a half-mile radius of the campus in Sangamon County,” said CyrusOne’s Bradd Hout. “This is intentional. We want to make sure that our sites are well located, and that we are learning from other issues we have had in the past.” The company’s holdings include a data center in Aurora, Ill.

Most people who spoke were against the proposed project, citing noise pollution, among other ills.

“The Illinois Constitution guarantees that ‘each person has the right to a healthful environment,'” said opponent Thomas Davis. “State zoning laws rightfully give explicit priority to health, safety, and welfare.”

Tuesday morning, CyrusOne sent a statement to WTAX/CapitolCityNow, and also sent a letter given to members of the Sangamon County Board.

“CyrusOne respects the process and appreciates the continued time, consideration, and engagement from county leadership, community members, and local stakeholders.
We remain actively engaged and committed to addressing questions, providing additional information, and continuing to work collaboratively with the community as this process moves forward.
This project is designed to deliver meaningful economic benefits, including significant investment, job creation, and long-term support for local infrastructure and community priorities.
We are encouraged by the ongoing dialogue in Sangamon County and the relationships we are building throughout this process.”
