SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) – Sixty-five central Illinois students recently went to University of Illinois Springfield to learn lawmaking at Sen. Steve McClure’s Youth Advisory Council program.

Students heard from McClure, Sen. Sally Turner, Illinois Supreme Court Justice Lisa Holder White and WAND News reporter Mike Miletich.

“It’s always impressive how engaged these students are and how much thought and effort they put into the activities,” McClure said. “I hope we’ve given them insight into how the legislative process really works.”

The event included a mock committee hearing where students played the roles of legislators, concerned citizens, lobbyists and the governor. Students also discussed the ongoing Chicago Bears stadium negotiations, even mock voting on legislation.

The Youth Advisory Council is open to all high schools in the 54th Senate District. If a student is interested in participating next year, they are encouraged to talk to their principal or superintendent.
