Springfield, IL (WAND) – One social media post has people in Springfield raising their eyebrows.
The post, shared across the Capitol City Wednesday night, stated that nine firefighters were injured and taken to the hospital. Springfield fire said: Not so fast.
“There were no injuries to any of our firefighters last night. No one was transported,” said Springfield Assistant Fire Chief Julie Plunk.
Even though there were several fires Wednesday night, none of them resulted in injuries to first responders. An AI software shared two separate emergencies as one incident. According to Plunk, Springfield Fire was transporting a patient to the hospital for a medical emergency. Around that same time, the Springfield Police Department had some problems with some individuals, and there were nine individuals.
Springfield Assistant Fire Chief Julie Plunk says the fake post stirs confusion in the community. It also has an impact on the families of first responders.
“Our firefighters, they work 24-hour shifts, so they’re away from their family. They’re away from their friends. Their families at home worried that they’re one of the people that was injured,” Plunk said. “If we’re to post something about an actual emergency or steps that the public should be taking at a certain time, and they go, well, we don’t know.”
