Springfield, IL (WAND) – The Illinois State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened Saturday evening in Springfield.

According to Springfield police reports, three men were arrested at the scene. ISP said the man who was shot was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

ISP said Springfield officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop after 5 p.m. Saturday in the 2400 block of Neil Road as part of an ongoing investigation.

The police reports said the vehicle was involved in several shots fired investigations and had a history of reckless driving and fleeing.

Police also said the vehicle was gang-affiliated. Officers believed the people inside the vehicle were circling Springfield to target a rival gang member to shoot in retaliation for the January 9 murder of Barrion Sanders.

Springfield officers ultimately forced the vehicle off the road as it traveled on Neil Street, according to Springfield police. Police said four armed men got out of the vehicle and fled on foot.

The police reports said one of the men was shot during the encounter. The Springfield Fire Department responded to the scene to render aid.

ISP said the injured man was taken to a local hospital and listed in serious but stable condition.

Neither ISP nor the Springfield police reports say who shot first during the encounter or who shot the man.

No officers were hurt. Several firearms were recovered at the scene.

The three other men in the vehicle — Malik Allison, Makai Allison and Kozzie Williams — were arrested on weapons-related charges. All three were denied pretrial release.

At the request of the Springfield Police Department, the Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation Zone has taken over the investigation.

Once the investigation is complete, the case will be forwarded to the Sangamon County State’s Attorney’s Office for review.
