So long, Shop ‘n Save

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) – Two Shop ‘n Save stores located in Springfield are closing down for good.

Supervalu announced the plan to shut down the 16 Shop ‘n Save stores it has left after it sold 19 stores to Schnuck Markets in the St. Louis area in September. The Springfield stores that will now close are located on Wabash Avenue and North Grand Avenue.

Niemann Foods Inc. bought a third Shop ‘n Save in Springfield, located on South Dirksen Parkway, earlier in 2018.

KSDK reports liquidation sales at the closing stores have started. Supervalu says it will fully shut down the buildings once the sales are over. The exact closing date for each store depends on when inventory is gone.

Supervalu Executive Vice President of Retail, Marketing and Private Brands Anne Dament told KSDK the company was unable to find a buyer for the remaining stores. She said the choice to close stores was a “difficult decision” that came “only after a diligent and thoughtful review of our options”.

The company said it can assist its workers with severance and transition if they work until the stores close completely.
