Springfield City Treasurer Jim Langfelder and Sangamon County Auditor Paul Palazzolo will face each other in April’s general election.
Langfelder pulled in 40 percent of the vote to Palazzolo’s 35 percent. Langfelder says he has strong ties to Springfield and will do what’s best for the city.
“It’s not about Jim Langfelder sitting in that seat, what it’s about is moving the city forward so we can be the model city in the United States for everybody’s betterment,” Langfelder says.
Palazzolo has similar aspirations.
“I’m talking about Springfield’s future, not necessarily legacies of Springfield’s past,” Palazzolo says. “I believe it’s time to help Springfield be a great city, that just happens to be the capital of Illinois.
Incumbent Mayor Mike Houston came in third with just 19 percent of the vote.
Ward 2 Alderman Gail Simpson tallied 5 percent of the vote, and political newcomer Samuel Johnson garnered just 2 percent.
