District 186 Board Sells Pleasant Hill Elementary

Teachers gather at Pleasant Hill Elementary School in the final days prior to closure/Springfield Public Schools/File

The former Pleasant Hill Elementary School in Springfield should soon have a new owner.

The District 186 Board has approved the $60,000 bid for the school by Central Illinois Sign Company, pending proper zoning changes from Sangamon County.

It’s the second time the district has tried to seek bids, and the bid was the only one, according to district maintenance manager Darrell Schaver.

“It’s hard to say what a building like that is worth,” says Schaver. “We’ve done this twice, so we got one bid out of two times. I think we’re at where we’re at.”

That’s Schaver’s response to why the district’s didn’t get a higher bid on the property. Pleasant Hill and another school were closed in 2013 as a cost-cutting move. It also wasn’t handicapped accessible per federal law.
