More evidence the cost of living in Springfield and parts of central Illinois isn’t that bad.
A study done by the website smartasset.com looked at the minimum wage in 141 U.S. cities, then took into account what that rate is adjusted for cost of living. And, of the top ten cities with the highest real minimum wage, Decatur and Springfield are ranked seven and eight.
Illinois’ minimum wage is $8.25 an hour. Adjusted for cost of living — or, what “Smart Asset” calls purchasing power — that goes up to $9.30 in Decatur, and four cents less in Springfield.
Comparatively, “Smart Asset’s” study says Chicago has a $10 an hour minimum wage, but adjusted for cost of living, it goes DOWN to $8.74.
A ordinance in Springfield remains tabled by the City Council setting a separate minimum wage.
