Christian Denies Settlement Offer from City of Springfield

The city of Springfield has offered to settle a federal lawsuit alleging police misconduct, but the plaintiff says “no deal.”

Calvin Christian says the city said it wouldn’t pursue costs or sanctions if he drops the case immediately. But Christian says he’s got evidence that Springfield Police are targeting him.

“The city of Springfield intentionally destroyed files so I wouldn’t get [them],” said Christian. “If they’re willing to break the law so I wouldn’t get files, then definitely, they’re willing to break the law by harrassing me.”

Christian alleges police monitor him and pull him over unnecessarily and without probable cause becacuse of his history of filing Freedom of Information Act requests into police misconduct.

Daniel Noll, representing the city of Springfield, couldn’t discuss specifics of the case — other than what will happen should it successfully defend against the lawsuit.

“We are going to be exploring all options in terms of what the city may look for in the future on this case,” he said.

Christian recently garnered a victory in that a federal judge determined the lawsuit could continue, dismissing a motion from the city to toss it.
