Mesha Fields (pictured, left) of Decatur opened her sweet shop, Sugafix, to a couple of area lawmakers Monday.

U.S. Rep. Nikki Budzinski (pictured, right) (D-Springfield) and State Sen. Doris Turner (D-Springfield) toured a handful of Black-owned businesses.

“For me,” said Fields, “celebrating Black business is because we need to make sure that we understand and kids see – representation matters.”

Fields’ business has been open a year and a half, though she has 17 years’ experience creating sweet treats. As for how government can really help, “We need more support. We need more help with revenue-building. We need more help with the bureaucracy, the taxes, the filings, and the different things, so you don’t fall into those traps that could potentially cause your business to fail.”

Budzinski is no stranger to Sugafix. On Election Day, she filled her pie hole with icing straight from the pastry bag.
