There’s room for another official state “something” in Illinois.

State Rep. Dave Severin (R-Benton) has rolled a bill through the House to make bicycling the official state exercise.

“Cycling is a low-impact exercise that can be enjoyed by people of all shapes and sizes, even mine,” said Severin, a big man. “As a high school athlete, I suffered several injuries to my knees, ankles, and feet. During these times I resorted to cycling to maintain my fitness and have continued cycling throughout my life.”

Another lawmaker, State Rep. Carol Ammons (D-Urbana), voiced her support, boasting her hometown’s bike trails as well as plans for a bicycle trail network from Mahomet to Danville.

And you may have seen the closest-living lawmaker to the Capitol, State Rep. Tim Butler (R-Springfield), going to and from work on a two-wheeler.

HB 2895 has passed the House, 111-1.
