Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) — A 31-year-old Springfield man died Saturday evening after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds, according to Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon. County deputies responded to a report of shots fired in the 2800 block of East Carpenter just before 8 p.m. Residents reported numerous shots were fired at a vehicle, and that vehicle then transported two victims to HSHS St. John’s Hospital.

According to Allmon, Lajarvious Smith was pronounced dead just after 8:30 p.m. at the hospital, shortly after arriving at the emergency room. A 23-year-old female suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. Smith’s autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

Sangamon County officials report the Sheriff’s Office Investigations Division canvassed the area for witnesses and video evidence. Detectives confirmed over 50 shots were fired from what is believed to be a dark, four-door sedan. The vehicle was last seen fleeing east on Carpenter Street.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office at (217) 753-6840, or Crime Stoppers of Sangamon and Menard Counties at (217) 788-8427.
