Springfield honors Martin Luther King Jr with day of reflection, service, and art

Springfield, IL  (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once spoke of a dream where justice and equality would flourish across the nation—a vision that continues to inspire generations. On Monday, Springfield will honor King’s enduring legacy with a series of events, starting with the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast presented by Frontiers International at the Crowne Plaza at 8:30 a.m. Illinois Supreme Court Justice Lisa Holder White will serve as the guest speaker.

The day’s celebrations continue at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, where actor Reggie Guyton will deliver live readings of King’s iconic “I Have a Dream” speech at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. in the museum’s main plaza. Delivered in 1963 at the Lincoln Memorial, the speech remains a stirring call for equality and justice.

Visitors can also participate in a blood drive hosted by ImpactLife from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., giving back to the community in the spirit of what’s often called a “National Day of Service.” The blood mobile will be stationed outside the museum at 212 North Sixth Street.

The day will conclude with a musical tribute to the civil rights movement. A string quartet will perform in the museum’s “Freedom in Form: Richard Hunt” exhibit from 1 to 3 p.m. The performance will feature an original soundtrack specially composed for the exhibit by Randy Erwin. The quartet will include Melissa Blankestyn on saxophone, Ann Collins on violin, Aaron Duncan on trumpet, and Sharon Lombard on cello. The special live performance is included with regular museum admission.
