Springfield, IL  (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – The Massey Commision has sent letters to the Illinois State Police, Department of Justice and the Illinois Attorney General’s office requesting a full review of the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office. Formed in the wake of the shooting of Sonya Massey in her home by a Sangamon County deputy in July, the commission was created by the county with the goal of addressing systemic racism and community mistrust of law enforcement.

The letters, sent on Oct. 28, call for a full review focused on hiring practices, handling complaints, and enforcing discipline to build public trust. The commission is asking to confirm appropriate procedures are in place to manage complaints and make sure disciplinary actions are enforced. The review aims to shed light on current practices and spot areas that could use improvement.
