Springfield, IL (WAND) – The Illinois Senate passed a bill late Thursday night to develop a new horse racing track in Macon County. Yet, House Democratic leaders chose to send members home without voting on the measure.
The Decatur horse track casino, or racino, would be privately funded without need for state dollars.
Sponsors said the mile-long harness racing track could feature grandstands, a sports complex, recreation fields, a gaming facility, retail, restaurants, and lodging.
Advocates believe the project can generate 300 full-time jobs and the facility would be built with 100% union labor.
“This is a crucial piece of legislation because it creates a unique opportunity for economic benefit in both counties located within the 48th district,” said Sen. Doris Turner (D-Springfield). “There is also a commitment for infrastructure upgrades at the Illinois State Fairgrounds that will expand year round training opportunities while strengthening the entire regional horse racing ecosystem.”
Turner said the racino would be a $220 million investment for Decatur and could potentially generate $27 million in annual revenue.
This plan passed out of the Senate on a 49-8 vote and moved to the House for further consideration.
“The horse racing industry in Illinois is ready to ride again thanks to the Decatur Racino project,” said Decatur Mayor Julie Moore-Wolfe. “The racino is a game-changer for Decatur and Macon County as we revitalize horse racing in our state.”
However, the Illinois House adjourned early Friday morning without addressing the proposal. That means the bill will stall until January unless lawmakers return for a special session before the end of the year.
