Durbin Expresses Hope Congress Will Act on New Gun Laws

Illinois’ Democratic U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin is expressing hope Congress will “have the guts” to stand for laws to keep guns out of the hands of suspected terrorists.

Durbin made an appearance in Chicago on Friday to rally public support for legislation he says would not only curb mass shootings across the country but reduce Chicago’s gun violence by reducing the influx of guns from Indiana.

Next week, the Republican-led Senate is scheduled to consider Democratic-backed legislation that would set up rules barring known or suspected terrorists from buying firearms and explosives. It would also broaden background checks for gun purchases.

The reignited push for gun control comes in the wake of Sunday’s massacre at a popular gay nightclub in Orlando.

Omar Mateen killed 49 people and left 53 more wounded. Mateen was shot to death by police.
