Suddenly we care about the Doctor
Suddenly we care about the Doctor

And suddenly we care about THE DOCTOR.

Dr Who in filming in Trafalgar SquareIn England people have been fans of Doctor Who since before they were even fans of the Beatles. Since 1963 the Doctor has been the James Bond of Sci Fi airing with different actors playing the character in series until he went away in 1989. The Doctor came back in 2005 when a newer younger approach was undertaken and it worked.

In fact the new producers made some super smart decisions in casting and writing the show. The show became huge in England. The star of the show though Christopher Eccleston left after one season. He was replaced by David Tennant who had gained fame on a Harry Potter movie. Tennant played the role from the end of 2005 til 2010. Then it was Matt Smith who took over the role and has even been nominated for the Bafta which is the English equivalent of the Emmy. Of all the decisions made by the new Producers of Doctor Who, none were smarter than the following.

Number 1: deciding to put the show on BBC America

Number 2: putting the show on Netflix

The cast of Doctor Who film the 50th anniversary specialThese two decisions have made the DOCTOR a known entity in the USA. We’ve always sort of been aware of the Doctor. I remember watching a show filmed much like a soap opera with some guy travelling in a phone booth and wearing a real long scarf on PBS while flipping channels in the early 80′s but that was all I knew about Doctor Who. Now though with Netflix you can go back and watch all the episodes from 2005 to current and to tell you the truth it is a FUN WATCH. This show has everything. It has comedy, action, adventure, drama, great acting, plot, and more. It has everything we love in a television show. The recognition of Doctor Who has blown up in the US and it is one of the most watched Netflix shows and the highest rated show on the BBC American channel.

That is why we care who the new Doctor will be. Matt Smith is leaving and this weekend they are announcing who the new Doctor will be on a televised special and I would not have said this would it have happened a year ago but I am saying it now. I’ll be watching.
