Movie Review PACIFIC RIM

Los Angeles premiere of 'Pacific Rim' Los Angeles premiere of 'Pacific Rim'The summer movie season just got a whole lot better with the premiere or PACIFIC RIM. The movie is unfortunately marketed incorrectly with the Trailers making it seem more like a Transformers ripoff than what it truly is… Which is an amazing Independence Day ripoff. I say that jokingly because if you remember that awesome feeling you got when you saw Independence Day the first time then you will be happy because you will experience that again.

This movie is very original with an understandable plot and a great cast that speaks clearly and action sequences that you can see. Unlike so many other movies of this genre this film doesn’t get stuck in making the action take place in the dark where you cant see it. That is a mistake many directors make. This Director, Guillermo Del Toro doesn’t make it. In fact Del Toro proves that he is one of Hollywood’e elite action film makers with this film. He also proves he needs to be given more to do. I know that Warner Brothers is trying to decide what to do with the DC comics superhero brand. They are trying to even surpass the Marvel comics success that Disney has garnered in the past few years. Warner’s should look no further than Del Toro to step in and be the man to make that long rumored Justice League movie. He has an amazing mind in regards to action

mixed with humanity and gives his actors a chance to shine even though they are surrounded by CGI.

The movie stars Charlie Hunnam who is most known as Jax Teller in the TV show “Sons of Anarchy”. It is nice to see him stretch a little bit (but not much) as the troubled lead character who is a modern hero simply trying to save mankind. Idris Elba another English actor who has got to be happy he doesn’t have to do an American accent is also fantastic but the guy who steals the movie is Charlie Day. The actor from “always sunny in Philadelphia” and “Horrible Bosses” plays a geeky scientists who finds a way to save mankind on the back of Hunnams and Elba’s bravery.

The plot is simple. An alien race of Giant sized Godzilla like Monsters has opened a portal at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean and has started attempting to destroy all of mankind in order to take over the planet. A giant monster comes out of the portal and causes as much destruction as it can before the govt eventually kills it. In order to save lives and keep the monsters from getting to shore the worlds super powers band together to create Giant Sized Robots piloted by actual humans that can go out and fight the Monsters. It sounds outrageous and unbelievable right? As a compliment to the filmmaker, let me say you don’t even second guess the absurdity of the notion and you just jump in and go for the ride. One of the pilots is played by Charlie Hunnam. The worlds leaders eventually decide to replace the robots after they deem them not effective. Meanwhile a geeky scientist played by Charlie Day has a plan to put an end to the war between the humans and monsters. Idris Elba is the military mind in charge of the closing robot program that wants to take one more shot at stopping the onslaught of monsters before humanity just throws in the towel.

This movie is really a fun ride. I know you will love it as I did.

I give it a hard to get 4 1/2 Stars out of 5. It is right up there with Man of Steel as the best movie of the summer and it is fun for the whole family.

GO SEE PACIFIC RIM!!
