The moderate summer weather is producing an overabundance of fruit and vegetables from area residents’ gardens.  There is a future home for your bumper crops.

In addition to the usual canned and dry goods distributed by area food pantries, there is one organization that is glad to accept your extra zucchini, tomatoes and, cucumbers.  Krista Lisser with the Central Illinois Foodbanks says fresh produce is at the top of the request list of their clients.

“People ask: ‘What do I do with my tomatoes? What do I do with zucchini?  I’m trying to give it away to my neighbors.’  We will welcome it with open arms,” says Lisser.

Lisser says many residents don’t realize how many area families are “food insecure.”  She says despite a slowly improving economy, the number of people that go to bed hungry throughout the region continues to climb.

Current estimates put the number at more than 118,000 throughout central Illinois; more than 36,000 children and 18,000 seniors often don’t have enough food.

Donations of produce, canned and dry goods may be dropped off at the Central Illinois Foodbank located at 19th and East Cook Streets.
