Springfield’s interim police chief will likely become permanent in a couple of weeks.

Kenny Winslow has been tapped to take the job permanently after taking over on an interim basis in July.

“If it wasn’t for the support of the mayor and the city council, the men and women of the Springfield Police Department, I wouldn’t be here today,” Winslow told reporters after Tuesday’s city council meeting. “I’m looking forward to it, it’s exciting. It’s challenging. We’re not a perfect department, but obviously we’re striving to be the best in the state. That’s my goal for the department, we want to be the best department possible.”

Winslow says he has plans for the department but is holding off on specifics for now. He’ll face the city council’s committee of the whole next week before facing final confirmation in two weeks.

Winslow was given the interim role after former Chief Robert Williams stepped down amidst allegations surrounding the police document shredding scandal.
