A newly-arrived pig virus is to blame for rising pork prices.

The good news is that your pork chops, sausage, and bacon are safe to eat.

The problem is simply in the animals,” says Jim Kaitschuk, executive director of the Illinois Pork Producers Association. “Unfortunately, it’s becoming increasingly prevalent across the United States. It has been over in Asia in the past but was introduced here in the United States in late April or May of 2013.”

It’s PEDV, porcine epidemic diarrhea virus. Kaitschuk says veterinarians are stumped as to the source and how it spreads. It mainly shows up in piglets.
