The Republican candidates for U.S. Senate hold the same views on immigration.

The candidates are Doug Truax and State Sen. Jim Oberweis. Both say U.S. borders must be secured. With respect to illegal immigrants already here, they say they should be offered legal status, but no path to citizenship. They both say they’re against “amnesty,” and they say that allowing legal status with no path to citizenship does not constitute amnesty.

Oberweis suggests a further penalty.

“I don’t believe they should be entitled to government entitlement programs,” he said.  “I think the penalty, in effect, is they should have to pay Social Security taxes, pay Medicare taxes, but not be entitled to those government benefits unless and until they apply and become American citizens like anybody else.”

The winner of the primary will face U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.). The two Republicans agree with Durbin that illegal immigrants brought here as children by their parents should be allowed legal status and an opportunity to apply for citizenship.
