When people stop at a newly dedicated rest area and see the plaque honoring Illinois State Trooper Kyle Deatherage, perhaps they’ll think of the dangers of distracted driving.

A truck driver who reportedly claimed to have “zoned out” killed Deatherage, a motorcycle cop in the middle of a traffic stop, in the fall of 2012. Now, a pair of rest areas along I-55 near the accident scene, at milepost 65 just north of Litchfield, bears Deatherage’s name.

Hopefully, this will serve to the travelers throughout Illinois of the importance of protecting and watching for our state troopers as they protect us on the highways here,” said State Rep. Wayne Rosenthal (R-Morrisonville).

“He taught me, ‘life is short; live it,’” said Deatherage’s widow, Sarah. “If he wanted to buy something, he bought it. If he wanted to do something, he did it. He didn’t wait until he had more time (or) more money. He made now the perfect moment.”
