The Farmer and the Drone

Don’t call it a drone; call it an “unmanned aerial vehicle.” Whatever you want to call it, it could be an airborne helper to Illinois farmers. They’re on display in Decatur at the Precision Air Ag Show.

“The FAA recently authorized some filmmaking companies in Hollywood to start working on it, and they said agriculture was next,” says promoter Stu Ellis. “Farmers will start getting interested in them (by next spring), not being worried about someone with sunglasses and a badge coming to shut them down.”

Ellis says the benefits include being able to “see” the whole field in a half-hour flight as opposed to a five-hour walk, and the precision of the device’s camera exceeds that of the naked eye.

The show is going on at Progress City today.
