Term Limits Gains Support

A new poll says term limits for state lawmakers will likely pass if it’s on the November ballot.

In the survey conducted by Southern Illinois University’s Paul Simon Public Policy Institute, nearly 80 percent of those who responded favored limiting lawmakers to eight years in the General Assembly.

The institute’s Charles Leonard says that’s not a surprise. “Every year, large majorities of every group we survey favor this, and I guess the only point in asking it again is to see if it’s still true,” Leonard said.

Almost 90 percent of Republicans and 73 percent of Democrats said they support term limits. Signatures are currently being collected to get the measure on this year’s ballot; 297,000 are needed.
