Tax Help Is Available

Tax Help Is Available

Illinois’ low- and moderate-income taxpayers can get free help in filing their tax returns.

Trained volunteers will help at times and locations across the state between now and Tax Day. Last year, they helped file 98,300 returns. “From those 98,300 returns that were prepared in 2013, there were over $100 million in refunds that came back here to the state of Illinois,” says Sergio Guzman of the IRS.

A benefit for taxpayers is that these volunteer tax preparers make sure that those who are eligible claim the earned income tax credit, the child tax credit and the American opportunity tax credit for college costs. Also, the service costs nothing, and the returns are filed electronically, so refunds come in a few days, and taxpayers won’t need a refund anticipation loan.

The website will have the times and locations at which tax help is available by the end of the month.
