Several law enforcement agencies responded to what was a standoff near Pana in rural Christian County.

A Pana Police officer was injured, the alleged gunman was killed.

A news release from the Illinois State Police says officers first responded around 3:15 Tuesday morning for a “man with a gun” call in the vicinity of 1498 East and 350 North, which is about seven miles west of Pana. A SWAT team and ISP Air Operations arrived to try negotiating, but the armed man set the roof of the house on fire and shot his gun toward officers.

The officers returned fire, killing him. He’s been identified as Josh Edwards, 25, of Pana.

Our news partners at WAND-TV report the incident began over drugs. Several people have been detained for questioning.

WAND says the deputy was shot in the shoulder. He’s at Memorial Medical Center in stable condition.
