Springfield Aldermen Hesitant to Hire Macon County Nurse for City Job

An age old question has resurfaced — should someone who works for the city of Springfield have to live in a certain place?

The contract for the city’s nurse case manager says he or she has to live in Sangamon County, but budget director Bill McCarty said the company doing the hiring, Triune Health Group,┬áchose someone in Macon County.

“Triune interviewed a couple of candidates, brought them in, and my understanding is the one who had experience in workers compensation was the one who lived just across the line in Macon County,” said McCarty.

The nurse case manager works with injured employees to more quickly rehabilitate them.

What was unclear following Tuesday night’s committee of the whole meeting was whether the person was already hired, or if the job offer was contingent on a change to the contract. The contract states someone in this position must live in Sangamon County, but aldermen are being asked to modify it to allow someone to live within 30 miles of Sangamon County.

The measure was left in committee as some aldermen wondered why no Sangamon County candidates could be found.

“The most important thing is getting the best person for ths job regardless of where they live,” said McCarty. “It’s kind of like here at the city of Springfield, we don’t require our people to live in Sangamon County. Yet, I believe our taxpayers want us to have the best people for the job.”
