Springfield Police are detailing their side of a Monday traffic stop which allegedly injured the shoulder of Calvin Christian.

In a new development late Thursday afternoon, the department’s Internal Affairs unit is refusing to investigate the allegations citing pending litigation. Christian is in the midst of a federal civil suit against the SPD, which the IA unit cited as its reason to refuse the investigation.

Despite pending litigation, Christian says the refusal of Internal Affairs to investigate “sends a message” to Springfield Police Officers that they can act however they want with no repercussions.

Police say Christian was a passenger in a vehicle pulled over because the windows were too tinted; marijuana was found in the backseat. Officers say Christian disobeyed multiple verbal commands and was arrested for obstruction. He was taken to St. John’s complaining of shoulder pain and was cleared by emergency room doctors.

Christian characterizes his shoulder injury as a “strain.”

He has been meeting with his attorneys and says he’ll “come out swinging.” He hinted a future lawsuit based on this incident could be in the works.
